Chapter 12 - The Search Begins

‘Have you any idea how wondrous this item is? Do you know how long I’ve desired a gingerbread house?’ the Guardian’s voice wavered as he spoke, ‘It’s truly magnificent!’

Mailliw, Drabder and Monity were relieved he hadn’t noticed anything wrong with the roof.

‘So what’s the procedure for locating a golden moonbeam?’ asked Mailliw as the Guardian continued gazing at the gingerbread house. This reminder brought the Guardian back from his trance and he summoned the little man who had brought the furs in earlier.

‘I need the keys to the war chamber,’ he commanded briskly.

The little man looked as shaken as Mailliw, Drabder and Monity.

‘But my lord…’ he spluttered.

‘Silence!’ boomed the Guardian, ‘These children need my help and they’ve paid a handsome price. My part of the bargain must now be honoured.’

‘Very well my lord,’ replied the little man and he scurried off to fetch the keys.

The Guardian turned back to the children and noted their worried expressions.

‘The likeliest chance of finding a golden moonbeam lies in the Land of the Ice Pixies. We haven’t been on good terms with them for some time due to our differences of opinion on certain business matters. But I’m prepared to contact them and negotiate terms for you. I expect King Pomidor to be rather difficult about this, so I’m afraid you won’t be able to attend the discussions in the war chamber. But I’ll organise a meal to be prepared so you can eat and rest while you wait.’

The little man returned with a set of keys. They looked as if they were made of ice, like everything else, but the Guardian explained they had been cut from one large diamond. In fact, the whole war chamber was made of cut diamonds. It was such an important room that it had to be far more secure than ice. Diamond had been chosen because it blended in with the rest of Central Junction. The Guardian left the room after giving instructions for food and drink to be brought.

After he left, Drabder said, ‘I think I must b-be dreaming. He has a war chamber made of cut d-d-diamonds! He has so much unbelievable wealth and yet he went gaga over our gingerbread house. You’d have thought he’d be able to buy m-millions of gingerbread houses!’

‘Bizarre isn’t it,’ agreed Mailliw.

‘I can sort of understand why he doesn’t,’ said Monity looking at them. They regarded her with puzzled expressions and then raised their eyes to the ceiling as if to say, ‘And what would a ten year old know about it?’

‘If he did buy millions of gingerbread houses, he would lose his dream because it wouldn’t be a dream any longer. The uniqueness of a gingerbread house would disappear and become a commonplace thing. Because he has so much wealth, I think he needs to desire something he can’t have or won’t permit himself to have. It works not only as a discipline but also as a way of holding onto his dream.’

During Monity’s explanation, none of them heard the little man return.
